NEws & Updates 12/29/07: Soldiers and Learning to Draw Again

Soldiers by Marty McCorkle

Soldiers. Oil on Canvas. h34 x w43 in. Esteban Saba Gallery.

Hi fellow art lovers,

I recently completed the painting of soldiers carrying a coffin. Setting aside positions on current wars, I longed to recognize the physical and emotional sacrifices that young people are making in these conflicts.

I was initially inspired by the procession of emotive figures in Rodin’s sculpture Burghers of Calais that France commissioned following its devastating loss of young men in the Franco-Prussian war.

I have been avoiding drawing to learn to think and paint without lines or outlines; I’ve used the computer exclusively to compose digital images for my paintings, a device that freely drops outlines while maintaining an image's integrity.

On Christmas Day, I used conventional drawing materials for the first time in many years for studies of Arjuna resorting to Krishna for guidance in the battle chariot as described in the Bhagavad Gita.

You can see my struggle in the second drawing below to introduce the shapes and waves familiar in my paintings into the drawing. I want to learn to integrate what I've learned from the computer into drawing in time.

Making the garage into a studio was a hot idea last summer when I was working nearly naked at times under a newly installed skylight. Though there is no insulation, the Berkeley winter is relatively moderate and I'm learning to deal with cold like any other problem—focus on purpose.

Have good new year.
